Salt Marsh

This picture is available for sale. It is hanging in the Silver Spirit Gallery in Silver City, NM, at the moment. It is one of my pastels. If interested contact me at jeansart@myartbyjean.com.

I am interested in commissions for art - special landscapes, portraits of people and animals.

My art class at the Silver City Senior Citizen Center grew this month. I got 3 new students. It may be time to see about starting a second class. I've tried to several times but each time the number of students dropped so that there was only 1 student attending. We'll see if it goes this time.

Happy New Year

My new year has started out great. I have three new students in my art class at the Silver City Senior Citizen Center. Because the center was closed for MLK Day we met at my apartment and viewed and discussed a number of pictures by contemporary New Mexican artists. The book, Art Journey New Mexico, 104 Painter's Perspectives, was put together with the help of gallaries in the northern part of New Mexico. Unfortunately it is heavily slanted to oils, with just a few pastels and watercolors. No other mediums were shown. Hopefully someday pastels, colored pencils, etc., will get the recognition they deserve. I consider oils the most forgiving medium there is. It takes a lot of skill to create a good picture in watercolor or colored pencil. Pastel is also a medium that I enjoy working in but it also takes drawing skill to have a good picture. That's my soapbox for this year.

Update

September 22, 2011. It has been several years since I put anything on this blog. I moved from Tallahassee, FL, to Silver City, NM, in 2009. I had lived in Silver City from 1977 to 1989 but left after my husband died. After suffering from the heat and humidity in Florida I decided that the relatively mild climate of Silver City was much better for my health so returned to New Mexico. I have become very active in the art scene here. I teach 2 art classes at the Silver City Senior Citizen Center. I belong to 2 art guilds - San Vicente Artists of Silver City of which I am treasurer and the Grant County Art Guild.

I just received a First Place award for a colored pencil picture (will add it at a later date) and a Second Place award for a Pastel painting. I have been asked to judge the Fine Arts division at the Grant County Fair which is being held next week.

I thought I would let you follow the progress of my newest picture. This is the one I am doing in oil pastels. Remember that I have never worked with this medium before. My style is very different with these pastels- much more loose, almost as if I am working with paints not a drawing instrument. I will continue to post my progress with this picture. If interested in anything I've done be sure to contact me at 850-893-8434 or jeansart@myartbyjean.com.

I've missed a couple of days, just did not get "around to it". I have pledged that I will do better. I am always challenging myself to do something new, harder, etc., in the art field. As I stated earlier I am trying out oil pastels which are proving interesting to work in. Monday I started in a clay class. This is one where we work with clay to produce figures or hand build pots without using a wheel. It should prove interesting. If I ever produce something noteworthy I will take a picture of it and put it on this blog.

I thought I would add more of my note cards to this blog. They are blank so you can write in what you want. If you are interested in getting some be sure to contact me at 850-893-8434 or at jeansart@myartbyjean.com.
